The documentary that you will about to watch somewhat resembles the short films that we featured but this happened in real life. The Man Who Ate Himself To Death is a short documentary about the tragic life of Ricky Naputi, one of the world’s fattest men. Ricky weighs almost 900lb, the weight that didn’t only burden him but also imprisoned him in his own home. Also, due to this weight, Ricky remained bedridden and unable to attend even his personal needs.
Desperate to be cured, Ricky and his wife, Cheryl, searched for weight-loss surgery patient and campaigner, Angie Flores, to seek for help regarding Ricky’s life and death condition. From Houston, Texas, Angie flew thousands of miles to be in Guam to personally meet and encourage Ricky to lose some weight. Angie was the one who became very hands on to help Ricky live longer. She contacted doctors who can possibly do the procedure that she had undergone to lose weight, looked for a special clinic where he could be closely monitored and searched for airlines that could fly him to America.
Unfortunately, before these to happen, Ricky must lose more than a hundred pounds to be admitted in the special clinic. Both Ricky and Cheryl were disappointed and just accepted the fact that Ricky must first lose some weight at home, a situation that is very impossible for them. Months and years passed and from his first weigh in, Ricky can finally stood up on his own but still he didn’t lose the weight that the doctors advised him to trim down. After two and a half years of documenting Ricky’s story, he passed away due to extreme obesity, a disease which could have been cured or even prevented.
